Sculpture Music

“…wonderfully structured harmonics and grooves. Really enjoyable.” Tom Robinson, BBC6 Music.

“Quite unique – massively impressed.  Unlike anything else being produced in the South West in my opinion”
James Santer – BBC Introducing

Sculpture Music are a unique contemporary jazz/ambient/world fusion duo from Exeter, Devon, consisting of Matt Calder (Hang Drum, Halo, Guitars, Electronica, Vocals) and John Shaw (Double Bass, Piano, Vocals). Hang Drums are combined with double bass, vocal harmonies and electronica elements to create textured world grooves and downbeat jazz soundscapes.

Matt and John were both brought up on a similar musical diet and share a mutual love for bands from the more ‘art house’ side of the mid 70s to early 80s such as Magazine, ATV, Joy Division and PIL / Jah Wobble. Both have been active in the music industry for the past 30 years. John has played as a session musician in London and is a classically trained French Horn player, as well as being involved with various Gamelan orchestras. Matt is a trained percussionist and has worked with Joan Armatrading’s rhythm section, as well as being an established media composer with work in advertising and websites such as Landrover (UK) and the BBC’s Natural History programme. Matt still writes occasionally for audio libraries and commercials.

Formed in 2013, Sculpture Music was inspired by Matt’s love of the Hang Drum, and more recently with the Halo, an instrument similar to the Hang but with a deeper, richer resonance.

The trance-like sonics of the Hang and Halo draws comparisons to African music and modern Jazz, with ambient and dance textures coming from the electronica elements, all firmly underpinned with a lyrical bass foundation. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Massive Attack, Steve Reich and Portishead, their debut album, “Minor Songs In Major Keys” was released in February 2013.

The album has already received extensive radio play on BBC Introducing, with the track ‘One Of These Days’  being featured on the Radio 6 Mixtape sessions with Tom Robinson. Several tracks also featured on Tom’s ‘Fresh On The Net’ listening post.

Notable gigs include supporting Manu Delago (Bjork), The Small World Stage at Glastonbury Festival 2013 and WOMAD Festival 2013.

The band are currently gigging and promoting the album, and plan to go back to the studio to record a new release in the winter of 2013 / 2014.
